The Original Great Maze 2017

The Original Great Maze 2017 is opening at Blake House Craft Centre for the Summer season. This massive annual maize maze will be opening to the public on Saturday 22nd July with an amazing new maze design and is set to welcome visitors daily from 10am (last entry at 4pm) until 10th September.

The 2017 maze design has for the first time been designed by a Great Eastern Primary School student, following a competition asking local children what rural life means to them and inspiring primary school children in Essex to design this year’s maze. Luke Tidball in year 2 rose to the unusual maze challenge and sent in the winning artwork, stating, “I love making mazes. I just wanted to make a tractor one. I gave it crawler tracks for extra grip.”

This design has been turned into a reality by our maze master, Peter John Carter, who will mark the opening of the maze with a presentation to both artist and school with their prizes and a certificate. Luke’s whole class will also be invited to take on his maze adventure with their teacher over the summer period as part of the prize.

Over the summer, visitors will take their journey through the twists and turns of this well loved symbol of our countryside. Puzzling their way through the maize, there will also be an interactive competition to inspire children, with the opportunity to win £100 with all correct answer sheets going into a prize draw at the end of the season. A lost souls escape map is available and a viewing platform is found at the end, enabling victors to spot friends still lost in the green labyrinth.

Now in its eighteenth year, this is one of the biggest and longest running mazes in the UK, with a new maze design sown each year using over half a million maize seeds and provides a fun day out for the family, or a competitive challenge for the experienced maze enthusiast.
